Concours owners like to ride, and the primary objective of COG rallies is to bring members and friends together to ride and explore new areas. This page provides several ride suggestions and samples while visiting the Four Corners area. The sample rides listed below come from COG.
All COG rides are considered sample ride routes and are unguided. Follow them as-is or adjust to meet your desires. Make new friends and head out for a ride. Hospitality area should have a ride hookup meeting place or place to post notes if you are looking to meet other rider. Unguided dual sport routes will also be posted.
POPULAR Area Riding Attractions
The Million Dollar highway – this area is well know for a stretch of US 550 called “The Million Dollar Highway”. The Million Dollar Highway stretches for about 25 miles (40 km) in western Colorado and follows the route of U.S. 550 between Silverton and Ouray, Colorado. It is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. Between Durango and Silverton the Skyway loosely parallels the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Though the entire stretch has been called the Million Dollar Highway, it is really the twelve miles (19 km) south of Ouray through the Uncompahgre Gorge to the summit of Red Mountain Pass which gains the highway its name. This stretch through the gorge is challenging; it is characterized by steep cliffs, narrow lanes, and a lack of guardrails; the ascent of Red Mountain Pass is marked with a number of hairpin curves used to gain elevation, and again, narrow lanes for traffic — many cut directly into the sides of mountains. During this ascent, the remains of the Idarado Mine are visible. Travel north from Silverton to Ouray allows drivers to hug the inside of curves; travel south from Ouray to Silverton perches drivers on the vertiginous outside edge of the highway. Large RVs travel in both directions, which adds a degree of annoyance to people on motorcycles. Summer temperatures can range from 70–90 °F highs at the ends of the highway to 50–70 °F in the mountain passes.
CO 141 – Colorado 141 from US 491 to US 50 is a great ride paralleling the Delores River. At Gateway CO (home of the Gateway CO Automobile Museum), CO 141 heads East through Unaweep Canyon to the Gunnison River valley where it joins US 50 at Whitewater. Not as technical as US 550, but much longer and beautiful terrain.
The Gateway, CO Automobile Museum was founded by Discovery Channel CEO John Hendricks. I don’t know why he put the museum where he did, but it is an excellent place to take a break and soak in the history. It certainly exceeded my expectations.
